Brent Fuller (Archive Image)Newspapers are always being criticised for sensationalising banal news stories.  And what better way to add a dash of spice than to invoke a timeless folksy exclamation

Personally I'm hoping this is the start of a trend that catches on all across the western hemisphere.  Here's a selection of newspaper headlines from around the world I've taken the liberty of adapting.  I think you'll agree, folksiness is the new Hamburger Helper of headline journalism.

Cripes!  Brown on course to win el...

One of the reasons cited that the Cayman Islands is a popular relocation destination for Commonwealth candidates is that it is an English speaking country.  Or so you might think!

I’m fascinated by the idiosyncrasies of regional dialects. Some may allege that this is because I am a pedant by nature. It’s true, imperfections irritate me. But I guess, when it comes to language, one man’s fish is another man’s poisson.

This week saw the February 2010 Coffee Cake and Careers evening held at the Cml Offshore Recruitment Cayman Islands office.  I had the pleasure of speaking with some fantastic candidates. Discussing future career plans and higher education plans with the help of the guys from UCCI. Oh and of course we all ate lots of cake.
Quite a number of people asked me what they needed to prepare in order to get started with an agency and more specifically the administration and support services team at Cml Offshore Recruitment.   I thought I would cover as much as I can here for all you internet surfers so you can be fully equiped for your search.

 Friends and Family

I have mixed emotions about the arrival of my family in the Cayman Islands this week to visit me. On one hand it’ll be great to spend time with them enjoying all of what Cayman has to offer, but on the other I feel unsure of how things will pan out, living on top of each other for 2 weeks solid. Having left home some 12yrs ago I am now more than able to control the going’s on in my own home. If I want a cup of Tea I’ll make myself one, if I want a Sandwich I’m more than able to butter two slices of bread, if I want a shirt ironed….. well, OK you can do that for me if you want to.

Living on the other side of the pond presents lots of wonderful opportuni...

According to a very experienced captive insurance manager in Cayman, the outlook for the industry for 2010 in comparison to 2009 is “fair to good”.

Captive insurance companies are insurance companies formed by its parent group with the specific objective of financing risks emanating from their parent group. A business forms its own insurance company subsidiary to insure itself against retained losses in a formal structure.

Cayman’s first ever Winter Olympian, Dow Travers, is the son of Cayman Islands Stock Exchange Chairman, Anthony Travers. Whilst his father navigates our financial services industry through the recession, white lists and attacks on our reputation, Dow will navigate the white powdery slopes in Vancouver for all of Cayman.

Dow was born in Grand Cayman, but went to boarding school in the UK as a teenager. His love for skiing began on his annual family vacations to Colorado and he’s not the only one, his two younger brothers Dillion and Dean are also avid skiers.

Being from a tiny, tropical, and very flat island, he ...

I saw the New Year in with a BBQ by the sea, feeling very settled in my new home. 2010 was going to be the best year I could just feel it. The countdown to midnight, watching the amazing fireworks at the Ritz Carlton and champagne in hand, I couldn’t be happier.  To celebrate my husband and his friends decided to take a dip in the sea, it was around 20 minutes into 2010 when we realized our house and car keys were floating somewhere on their way to Cuba.

We spent the first few hours of the New Year me...

Cayman Indoor Football World Cup 2010

This coming weekend marks the Annual Cayman Indoor Football World Cup at Kings Sports centre. Consisting of 16 Teams across 4 Groups, the Tournament is fantastic weekend of hotly contested indoor football and showcases some of the Islands brightest talent and in some cases, one’s inability to keep up with some of those 10yrs younger than them. Countries represented in the Tournament include England, Scotland, Ireland, Cayman, Jamaica, India, USA, Canada and a mixed Brazil / Portugal team. This is just another example of what Cayman has to offer in terms of competitive sporting activities throughout the year. The Tournament is screened live over t...

The sleepy offshore employment market continues to rouse itself in the wake of increased perceptions of economic recovery across the globe.
The mood of the employers is shifting to a more emphatic “cautiously optimistic” as business continues to flow in though the door. A number of employers have expressed surprise at the speed of the recovery, but the message is clear, investors seem once again willing to step away from the sidelines and into the fray.
The Cayman Net News today announces the official grand opening of Intertrust Cayman, a global trust and corporate services company and the newest member Cayman’s business community. The o...

Okay, I’d better be honest with you from the start, because that’s the kind of person I am. I agreed to produce this article describing my experience as an auditor in Cayman over the last 15 months for my friends at CML in exchange for a lot of beer. I would much rather be spending my weekend in the usual fashion on the beach at Royal Palms or Calico Jacks with my mates.

Once I’d gotten the exams out of the way (first time passes by the way!) I’d already started to think about what I wanted to do at the end of my three years of working for a mid tier audit firm in the UK. The idea of working abroad for a period appealed strongly as I’d missed out on having a GAP year between the end of University and the star...

So there I was sat around the pool of our apartment staring out to sea looking considerably healthier than when I stepped off that 747 two weeks before. Surely it doesn’t get better then this? Then I discover the Cayman Islands Sunday Brunch.

The New Year is always a time for reflection, planning and getting in touch with old friends. We sent out an email to some of the candidates we have placed in the past, to see how things are going and were pleasantly surprised with the response.

Most of you are doing very well, still in the positions we placed you! Others are keen to work with us again and are happy to hear from us. But a response that we didn’t expect, but should have anticipated from such a lovely bunch, was the amount of thanks we received from you!

Our livelihood is based on your career change, a huge step in anyone’s book. And it is only natural for us to be pleased when our actions lead to a better life for you. So whe...

2009 was a difficult year in the recruitment world, but it was a great year for CML. February saw the launch of our Hong Kong office and since then we have fought against the Asian economy stagnating, law firms and financial services institutions going through not one, not two but in some cases three rounds of redundancies and a region wide recruitment freeze that is only now just starting to thaw.

Our first year saw us slowly pick up new clients that trusted us with the one or two roles they hired last year, from there we started with a handful of interview requests which turned into placements at the start of Q3. Since then we haven’t looked back.

I'm looking for a number of derivatives lawyers on both the equities and fixed income/credit side for some of the global investment banks based in Hong Kong and Singapore. They need to be very strong and around the 4-6 PQE mark.

To paraphrase the now famous words of Mikhail Gorbachev, “if not you, then who? And if not now, then when?”

If you’ve ever wondered what type of people are brave enough to uproot their lives and move thousands of miles away from what they know, then the simple answer is people like you.

UK government estimates in 2006 show that one in ten Britons, an incredible 5.5 million people live outside the UK.

As we catch our breaths, and slowly extricate ourselves from the punishing economic conditions we have suffered in the last 18 months, there has never been a better time to take a step back and analyse where you are in your career against wh...
